MSCI 410 - Scientific Diving

Tuesday, August 6, 2019 - 08:00 to Friday, August 23, 2019 - 17:00

Are you interested in learning science and conducting research underwater?  Did you know you can take your scuba certification farther at Cal Poly?

Take the Cal Poly Scientific Diving Course and learn how you can apply your scuba certification to learning and conducting research in marine science.  In a unique Learn By Doing fashion, you can learn advanced diving techniques & watermanship skills and underwater data collection techniques in oceanography, marine biology and marine geology.  Practice oceanographic instrument deployment & maintenance techniques, transect sampling, and taking sediment cores, all while diving from Central California beaches, the Cal Poly Pier and Cal Poly research vessels.

The Cal Poly Scientific Diving Course covers theoretical (lecture) and practical (diving) training in scientific diving for a total cumulative contact time of 100 hours, 12 dives, and a total of 6 hours of bottom time.  For the Summer of 2019, the class will be offered in a condensed format, running all day during the period of August  6 – August 23.  Due to the condensed, fast paced nature of this class, there are many academic, administrative, and diving related prerequisites (see below).  Instructor consent by permission code is required.  To apply, start by submitting a Scientific Diver Application and reviewing the required documentation

Please contact Jason Felton, Cal Poly Diving Safety Officer (jfelton@calpoly.edu), for more information.

Completion of a Scientific Diving Course is required to conduct research using scuba diving (or other compressed gas diving technologies) at Cal Poly.
