UCSC - REU Internship Announcement!

The Raimondi-Carr Lab at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for two Research Experience for Undergraduate (REU) internships for summer 2018 funded by the National Science Foundation. Under the direction of Dr. Mark Carr, these positions will be involved in studies of the roles that sea otters, sea stars, and sea urchins play in regulating kelp forest ecosystems. Interns will be trained in using underwater sampling and experimental methods to test hypotheses concerning predator/prey dynamics of otters,stars, and urchins. Candidates are required to be AAUS certified scientific divers with experience working in the cold-water environment of central California and possess suitable personal dive gear for these conditions. Candidates will preferably have experience with underwater survey techniques and the identification of invertebrate and algal species in the region. Working conditions require frequent long days and strenuous conditions, and require performing well both independently and as part of a team. Internships will last 11 weeks (approximately June 18 - Aug 31 depending on individual schedule). Students will be paid a stipend of $5500 and a monthly allowance of $360 per week for food and housing.
